Data and society share a dynamic relationship: data shapes our world while our world generates data. AI and planetary-scale computation have transformed datafication, converting decision-making into quantifiable data processed by algorithms rather than humans. Though perceived as neutral, datafication carries political implications, it marginalizes indigenous knowledge, reshapes power dynamics, and fragments legal accountability. In this book, we analyse datafied decision-making which is increasingly built on large scale data environments and managed by computational technologies, whereby computational and legal systems, power relations, and material infrastructures jointly reshape decision-making processes. Based on 11 studies examining datafied decision-making across labour, politics, AI, law, climate governance, healthcare, and infrastructure, this volume demonstrates how datafication’s exclusions perpetuate injustice, and how actors reclaim power through its gaps. In doing so, we aim to contribute to the cross-disciplinary and international discussion on automated and data-driven decision-making that is currently underway.
