How scholars’ research practices can unintentionally reproduce existing socio-political order can be addressed through a reflexive theoretical approach. However, the material component of reflexivity, both as a metadiscursive dimension and as a practice of research, is a recent discussion. Through a counter-reflexive analysis of a research project on the economic articulation of rurality in southern Europe developed since early 2021, the paper engages in an epistemological discussion of discourse studies scholars’ position to shed light on the omitted materiality of metadiscursive elements intervening in and through research practices that concur to reproduce social and symbolic hierarchies of power in localized singular contexts.
