Panic disorder is one of the anxiety disorders and occurs relatively frequently. Those affected by it suffer from sudden panic attacks with violent physical symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, and dyspnea. These attacks seem to come out of the blue. With regard to agoraphobia, attacks like these are triggered by crowded places, crowds of people and other situations in which no help can be expected or from which the sufferer cannot escape. If left untreated, these two disorders have a poor prognosis and often lead to other comorbid illnesses such as depression or addictive disorders.
This treatment manual by Julia Zwick and Martin Hautzinger relies on the following essential therapeutic elements: information transfer, cognitive intervention and confrontation with the trigger stimuli. The therapy also includes relaxation procedures, medication and getting relatives involved.
